Meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m.
Liz Bradt reminded committee of organization meeting on April 9 at 6:30 p.m. atat 135 Lafayette St. to elect vice chairs, treasurer, secretary, and chairs of seven wards.
Liz Bradt noted that SDCC Caucus is March 2 at 11:00 a.m. at 135 Bridge St to elect delegates to the
Massachusetts Democratic Convention (June 1 in Worcester). There will be spots for Young Democrats, veterans, disabled, and BIPOC in addition to the elected delegates.
Lydia King of Solidarity Rising spoke about the organization’s current housing initiative. Their goal is to capitalize on the Mass Housing Choice Initiative, which enables municipalities to pass zoning legislation more easily. Currently, only 13% of Salem’s properties are zoned for multi-family housing. For more information, visit
Doreen Wade of Salem United spoke about the importance of the Negro Election Day Parade on July 20. She noted Salem had the first Democratic Black voting system founded in 1741. Negro Election Day was made a
state holiday in 2022.
Diane Yates spoke about her work with the Salem voter registration file, which contains 33,000 registered voters in Salem. She talked about how the spreadsheet is a valuable tool for organizing and canvassing.
Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker spoke about his top initiatives.
Jim Mulloy talked about the Salem Offshore Wind Terminal, which is currently under construction. He noted that the Salem Offshore Wind Alliance helped to secure $9 million for a community benefit fund. The wind terminal is unique in that it is one of a few sites that will support the construction and installation of floating offshore wind in
the Gulf of Maine.
