Salem Democratic City Committee May Meeting

Meeting Minutes:


10% of elected voting members need to be here to vote.

1st order of business:

Move to approve the minutes, Debbie moves, Lydia seconds, - motion carries (unanimously)


Ward 6 chair is open, need candidates

Main duties: Keeps a list of the members of the ward.


Affirmative Action Advisor Role:

“Would anyone like to run?” - only Shey

Vote - Jason moves, Nancy seconds, - unanimously consensus 

*Shay says “thank you. We have work to do.”


Bylaws:

Should they be changed?

John Mahoney, Shey Jaboun, and Jason Sydoriak volunteer to be on the bylaws committee 


We may also want to rename Affirmative Action Role.


Reports from Officers:

Micheal (Treasure) -

Received $338 in receipts, $237 in Bills

Balance is $2410


There are committees created by the bylaws:

  • Onboarding committee 

    • Let Liz know if you want to help welcome new members


Jodie Foster (for Trades of Hope, Lives in Lynn, works as vet nurse):

  • Missional company:

    • Social justice sustainable jobs for people in other countries. Breaking generational poverty in these countries.

    • Founded 12 years ago 

    • Trade of Hope works with artisans in the DR, Southeast Asia, Haiti, Kenya

      • Helps trafficking survivors, orphans, disabled people.

    • These moms are able to have a normal family unit

      • Because these workers are paid 3-5X what they would normally would get paid. It uplifts entire communities

-  Ways to get involved:

  •  Host a popup - at a book club or at your house. Or an online popup


- 1 Million USD in givebacks this month

  • They are donating self-defense classes to women in India. They also provide counseling for survivors of trafficking 

  • They also have coffee or tea subscriptions. And the Hope mail subscriptions- Jewelry and a few other things


Eunice Ziegler:

Running for Governor's council for district 5. Masters in Economic Development. First POC counselor in 6 years in council. 10 years in organizing Methuen. 

  • Director of Advancement YMCA. VP of strategic planning for Eileen Duff is the current governor's council seat holder. 

  • What is a governor's council? 

    • Final vote of approval for all judges and parole board domestic violence and abuse has gone up in MA since the pandemic

    • We need judges to take these cases seriously and quickly 

- Pardons and communications

- Give a 2nd chance to someone who has proven themselves to be a model citizen. 

She is on every platform and is very accessible. There are currently 40 vacancies in judge seats. It's delaying the court's pace. 

She will be walking in the pride parade in June. 

The council is falling short on transparency right now.

  • Committees about docket and scheduling

  • Streaming it on YouTube, they may stop that.

She has several opponents. One fromm Salem (independent), one from Peabody(republican) 


She is endorsed by:

Event in Salem on July 24th - Garden Party 


June 22nd garden party 4pm @ John Arches House. Eunice will be there. Talk to Julie for details. 

  • Liz will email out details. When Julie gives them to her.

State committee reports:

  • Convention on Saturday. Registration opens at 8am, get busy at 9am. Be on the floor at 10am in seats.

  • Notify Nigel or Steve Kerrigan (Liz will Email) about who the full delegates are.


Pride parade at noon in Salem. June 22nd. 


Monday July 8th 6pm - next meeting, here.

  • Sarah Stanley coming here. Talking about healing from abuse. 


Negro Election Day parade. July 20th. 


August 12th 6pm - Need a speaker
