Minutes of Salem Democratic City Committee Meeting

10-14-2025 at Far from the Tree on Jackson Street in Salem

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 by our Chair Liz Bradt.

Eleven voting members attended. We  had seven  people in attendance who were interested in joining our committee.

We needed a quorum of 12 voting members and so could not vote to accept the minutes from prior meetings or vote in new members. Since we had one email vote form Linda Stark to accept the statement it did pass.

Alex Blumfield read our finalized Statement Against Political Violence. It has been updated and is less focused on any one violent event and simply states our abhorrence of violence in politics in any form.

Statement Against Political Violence

We are facing an increasingly violent moment in our nation’s politics. Whether you are reacting to gun violence or to those in power attempting to exploit fear for political gain, it is okay to be afraid and angry.

We are horrified, like the majority of the country, by the rise of political violence against public figures throughout this year. We are equally appalled by the violent acts taken by this administration, under the pretext of curbing violence, against our transgender and immigrant communities to deprive them of their lives, livelihoods, and constitutional rights to free speech and due process. We must reject these acts of political violence, which threaten the safety of everyone, and the exploitation of this frightening moment to erode everyone’s civil liberties.

As we navigate what comes next, we must hold onto and support those at risk in Salem. Our city has grown from the Witch Trials, a period of state-sanctioned violence, to a strong and welcoming community that can weather this storm. Salem Democrats are committed to engage with and protect our neighbors, and turn our sadness and anger into solidarity.

Thanks to Liz we had a bite to eat and the cider was excellent.  Lots of conversations took place.  It was a very pleasant get together.

We adjourned  around 7.

Our next meeting will be on November 20

Respectfully submitted by Joanne Moar

Co-Secretary SDCC
